Rhetorical Devices: Hyperbole and Understatement

Hyperbole:
1. School is so boring that I fall asleep once I enter a class.
2. My friend is so fast that he can run around the earth in less than 1 minute.
3. It is raining so much that I’m going to have to swim once the puddles reach my height.
4. His favorite baseball team is the Mets, and he decorates every single thing he touches with the Mets logo.
5. Cobra Kai is an awesome show. I can literally rewatch it non-stop no matter what.
6. I encounter musical groups like people who Christmas carol a lot to the point that they should just live in front of my house because they are everywhere.

Understatement:
1. The meal was delicious than I actually expected.
2. Our team is, shall we say, well trained.
3. That television show was exactly as I expected in the critic reviews.
4. The band is very talented and know how to play their instruments very well.
5. As a performer, I wonder if a lot of performers get nervous as well.

I noticed that the writer expands what he is describing by stating the obvious. For example, the writer wrote “those who walk this great down” and describes the number of women, children.
It is highly obvious that you would encounter that.
